The Diatesse XPER blood sugar meter has the option to also measure ketones. During exercise, our body uses sugars. Sometimes these can also be fats.
The consumption of fats produces ketones. These ketones, if in large quantities, can acidify our blood. An elevated ketone level is called a “ketosis”. A strongly elevated ketone level, including acidification, is called a “ketoacidosis”
Since ketoacidosis in combination with diabetes can lead to a diabetic coma, measuring ketones under special circumstances is strongly recommended. Especially if there is also an illness and/or fever and vomiting. You should also consult your healthcare provider!
Why measure ketones?
During physical exertion, our body uses sugars (Glucose) or fats. The consumption of body fats produces ketones and in large quantities can acidify your blood. An increase in your ketone level is also referred to as ketoacidosis. Since ketoacidosis in combination with diabetes can lead to a diabetic coma, measuring ketones under special circumstances is strongly recommended. Otherwise, you can also look at the Ketogenic Diet, for example.
